First, a couple disclaimers. This has obviously not been edited. Also, my original intent on this scene was for it to open the book as sort of a glimpse of what was to come, but since then, my plot changed, and so it will be in the book, but no longer as the opening, which also means it will probably change some, as it will be a full scene of action and not just a snippet served to entice the reader.
This is from Carma's perspective. Here it is!

Her calves ached and her hamstrings burned, but she barely felt the pain. She pumped her legs faster. Faster.
The canopy of trees blocked the moonlight and made it hard to see in the dark. Behind her, she could hear the crackling of sticks and debris breaking under his pounding footsteps. She could hear them over the wild beat of her own heart, the harsh exhalation of her breath. She could hear them over the screaming wails of the babe in her arms. Each sound was magnified. A blaring siren. A warning of his approach.
She veered to the left, weaving her way through the trees. When the baby’s cries ceased, she glanced down at her. She knew it would slow her—checking her daughter’s face—but she had to make sure she was okay, ensure the jostling of her movements hadn’t harmed her.
When her tiny pink lids blinked up at her, Carma squeezed her tighter. “It’s okay,” she whispered. “It’s okay.”
Before she could say anything else, murmur any more assurances, a rough hand gripped her shoulder and jerked her back.
Carma yelped and stumbled. She fought to keep her balance, to keep the baby, who had resumed wailing, in her arms.
This was it, she thought. No more running. It’s time to fight. I’ll fight for you. I’ll fight for both of us. For once, I’ll fight for myself, she thought.
She placed the baby behind the thick trunk of an old oak, as quickly as she could manage, and turned around to face him.
